YouTube Reviews | BRomania
I don’t
know about you, but I’m always in for a good laugh. I especially appreciate
comedy that reflects on our society and mocks some problematic forms of human
behavior. I usually consume American style comedy but I was pleased to stumble
upon a Romanian social-media personality who also creates in similar style but
mixes it with elements of Romanian culture and his personality. This is BRomania
who has a Youtube channel but also publishes his videos on Facebook. The
creator’s real name is Matei Dima who is a vlogger, actor and producer. He
studied acting and filmmaking in the United States and after finishing school
came home to use his talents and knowledge earned abroad to entertain and
create.
What first
captured my attention about BRomania’s videos was the quality and effort that
went into them. These are not simple videos without structure and planning, nor
are they filmed and edited poorly. It really shows that Matei learned the craft
of filmmaking because he uses quality equipment for his filming, edits the
videos professionally, follows the structure of storytelling and places the
punchline right where is needs to be for comedic value. His videos are
available in full HD, he uses different angles and shots while filming, and the
videos are edited in a coherent way that elevates the story and leads the
viewer’s attention to comprehend the buildup to the punchline. Recently
Bromania also started a new series on Youtube where he discusses different
topics with his mother while they are cooking something.
The themes
which the videos revolve around are the realities of the Romanian youth
culture. The videos are targeted toward young adults who are in their twenties
early thirties and reflect their everyday life. Common themes are: romance and
the obstacles between couples like the possessive girlfriend, the jealous
boyfriend and ridiculous fights over nothing; friends and their good or bad
behavior towards each other like friends who like to kiss the others on the
cheeks, who talk behind each other’s back and who are protective of each other;
and things young people do like pretend to not like manele, partying, hookups
etc. He also likes to make fun of the typical Romanian behaviors regarding
things like standing in line or speaking a foreign language. The characters are
usually caricatures of everyday people, they act in an exaggerated manor and
that’s what makes them funny.
My only
issue with his comedy is that there aren’t many rounded female characters in
them, he only shows a few aspects of women which is often spitefulness. Only
pretty actresses are casted with full makeup and with a slim body type not
representing the beauty and variety of other types of women.
In
conclusion BRomania’s videos are unique and have good quality, reflect
professionalism and good humor that often mocks behaviors of Romanians. It is a
mirror that helps us reflect on ourselves and on our shortcomings while we have
a good laugh. A downside of his comedy is that it presents women as two dimensional,
hollow characters. Besides this I recommend this youtuber and encourage you to
check out his Youtube channel and his Facebook page.
